Why a Draft-Free Coop Is More Dangerous Than You Think
You wanted a coop that kept the wind out and the heat in. So every gap got sealed, every crack filled. A draft-free coop feels like a success. It isn’t. Without air movement, moisture from breath and droppings stays inside, humidity climbs, and that’s what freezes combs and wattles — not a draft. That same trapped wet air also concentrates ammonia and pathogens, hitting the respiratory tract hard. The belief that a wind-tight coop is warm enough gets chickens sick every winter. Here’s why, and exactly what to build instead.

Moisture is the hidden enemy. When relative humidity sits above 70–80% inside the coop, water condenses on cold surfaces overnight — combs, metal drinkers, window glass. That liquid turns to frostbite on soft tissue. At the same time, high moisture activates ammonia from litter, and without airflow to carry it out, cilia in the birds’ airways get damaged, opening the door to E. coli, Mycoplasma, and other infections. Insulation doesn’t fix this; controlled ventilation does.
The Six-Move Fix
- Figure the minimum vent area: 1 square inch of net open vent per square foot of coop floor area.
- Split the total between high exhaust (warm, wet air) and low intake (cooler, drier air).
- Install a continuous ridge vent or louvered gable vents at the highest point.
- Add soffit vents, eave gaps, or low wall vents — half the total vent area goes here.
- Keep all vents open year‑round; use baffles or hardware cloth, never close them fully.
- Every morning, check windows and walls for condensation — moisture signals a vent problem.
Ventilation Choices Step by Step
Size the Opening Based on Floor Area
Measure the interior floor (length × width). Extension poultry guides commonly call for 1 square inch of permanent vent per square foot of floor — that’s winter minimum. Extra-large birds or heavy stocking density push the need toward 1.5 square inches per square foot. A 6×8 coop (48 sq ft) needs about 48 square inches total, spread across multiple vents, not one big hole.
Divide the Vent Area: High Out, Low In
Warm, moist air collects at the ceiling; it must exit high. Cool replacement air comes in low, without blasting roosting birds. Aim for roughly 60% of total vent area as exhaust high up, 40% as intake down low. A 50/50 split works provided the intake air is baffled or not aimed at the roost. If the coop has a ceiling or loft, exhaust openings must be above that ceiling line.
Exhaust: Ridge Vent or Gable?
- Continuous ridge vent: Ideal for gable roofs. A 2‑inch‑wide opening running most of the ridge length gives far more vent area than most small coops need. For the 48‑sq‑ft example, a 48″ long, 2″ wide strip is 96 sq inches — double the target — so block off sections or use a narrower gap. Extra capacity aids summer; just make sure the opening is screened.
- Gable vents: Use when a ridge vent isn’t practical. Install louvered vents as high as possible on each gable end, sized to supply the high‑exhaust share. For 60% of 48 sq inches (29 sq in), you could place a roughly 4″×4″ open louvered vent on each gable.
Intake: Soffit, Eave, or Low Wall
Intake openings must sit below roost level. Options:
- Soffit vents: Continuous under‑eave screening lets air enter gently under the roof overhang, tempering it before it reaches the birds.
- Eave gaps: A 1‑inch gap along the eave, covered with hardware cloth, works.
- Low wall vents: Framed openings with adjustable slides, installed no higher than 12 inches off the floor.
For the same 48‑sq‑ft coop with 40% intake (about 19 sq in), two 3×3‑inch openings on opposite walls serve the purpose. Cover with ¼‑inch hardware cloth to keep out rodents.
Handle Drafts Without Blocking Airflow
You don’t want a cold air jet hitting the roost. That’s handled by baffles, not by closing vents. A simple angled plywood baffle mounted inside in front of an intake vent redirects air upward so it mixes before reaching the birds. In severe cold, you can temporarily reduce intake opening — but never fully close it. Cover a portion with a removable board, leaving at least 25% of the original open area.
Spot Checks That Prove It Works
- Condensation: Run a finger over windows and walls first morning — any moisture film means vent area or distribution is off.
- Comb condition: The comb should feel dry and flexible at dawn, not wet or tacky. Damp signals impending frostbite.
- Ammonia smell: Open the coop after a night‑long closure; if you smell ammonia, ventilation is inadequate.
- Litter feel: Bedding shouldn’t be clammy. Damp litter means the moisture load outpaces your vent capacity.
When Moisture Won’t Clear
Condensation persists even with vents open
Increase total vent area by at least 50%. Check that intakes aren’t blocked by stored items or snow.
Strong ammonia smell, low visible humidity
The problem is poor distribution. Add or enlarge high exhaust vents; a small louvered vent at the peak can shift air exchange dramatically.
Frostbite still shows on combs
A direct draft is likely. Intake air is hitting the roost. Install baffles or lower the intake. If extreme cold forces intake reduction, never block more than 75% — and check condensation every morning.
You sealed the coop tight and frostbite already occurred
Open the ridge area immediately, even with a temporary prop. A cracked roof panel or partially open top door lets moisture escape while you build proper vents.
Once airflow moves as it should, frostbite becomes rare and respiratory illness declines. The next task that follows naturally is locking in a bedding routine that produces the least ammonia — deep‑litter management or frequent dropping‑board cleanouts.
