Watch out: Some labels show “available phosphorus,” which is lower. For cross-brand comparisons, use total phosphorus unless you have precise strain data.

4. Methionine — The Hidden Limiter

Methionine rarely appears on the Guaranteed Analysis. Open the ingredient list. Look for “DL-Methionine” or “Methionine Hydroxy Analog.” If it’s there, the feed is supplemented.

Why it matters: Methionine is the first limiting amino acid for egg production. Without it, hens can’t use that crude protein. Egg size shrinks even if protein looks fine.

Watch out: A feed can include methionine without printing a guaranteed minimum. That’s standard and acceptable as long as the ingredient appears.

5. Ignore the Front-Label Hype

After checking those four numbers, skip everything else on the front—“all-natural,” “farm fresh,” “high energy,” barnyard art. Those terms change price, not egg output.
